Product: Crystal Lip Balms / Crystal Liquid Highlighter
Cost: $5.00USD / $9.00USD
If you’ve read my post on the Kat Von D alchemist Palette, then you’ll know that I’m all for iridescent makeup, so when Colourpop came out with their Crystal makeup line I was instantly intrigued. Originally I set out to buy the whole line, but by the time I went to add the products to my cart most was already sold out, so, I opted for the whole lip balm range and also managed to grab the liquid highlight in amethyst. I’ll go through all four of the crystal balm colours as well as the liquid highlight, swatches of each and a different way to use the balms that is less obvious than their intended purpose!

Out of all the products I ordered from this range this one is probably my personal favourite. Each of the products in the crystal range have a colour based off a particular crystal, this one being an amethyst. So, this liquid highlight is a cool tone sheen with a purple reflect – the pigmentation is CRAZY so you’ll only need a little bit to shine to the gods. I think the bottle itself is great too, it comes with a pump and cap – however the pump can be a little sporadic so I need to be careful when dispensing the product.
As you can see from the swatches the pigment of this highlight is amazing. It comes out fairly thick at first but with a bit of blending it changes to a stunning sheen that makes a wonderful highlight to the cheekbones if you’re after a crystal-like, cool tone glow. I’m quite interested to try out the other colours from this range as I’m a big lover of quirky highlight colours.

When I first saw these lip balms on the colourpop website I thought they may be similar to the Limecrime lip toppers, but when I first swatched and tested them they’re a little different. I’d say that the formula of these balms are like a sheer lipstick, super moisturising with a coloured reflect that occurs when the light hits your lips. The range has four colours; Rose Quartz, Aquamarine, Amethyst and Aventurine. Rose Quartz is a pinkish balm with a gold shift, Aquamarine a white tone balm with a blue reflect, Amethyst a duochrome pink and purple balm, and Aventurine a minty balm with a green shift.
Originally I planned to post lip swatches and look ideas for these balms, however when applied to the lips I REALLY didn’t like the look. I’m not sure if my lips aren’t smooth enough or whether the formula wasn’t quite for me but I just couldn’t get them to work. I thought I’d test them on the cheeks as highlighters and I quite like the look. I applied these without any other makeup on (hence the super close-up photographs of my freckly face!) so these swatches aren’t exactly a complete look, but I still think these would look brilliant for photography. Overall, I’m not that happy with this release from colourpop. While I like the liquid highlight, the lip balms have a strange formula, the packaging was of low quality, and to top it all off right after swatching the aventurine balm it snapped right off the tube – slightly annoying! Colourpop will always be one of my all time favourite companies but I feel like this launch was sort of rushed and wasn’t true to colourpop’s usual quality.
Let me know what your favourite colourpop products are! I think the brand as a whole is great, colourpop always has affordable products that are almost always great quality as well as cruelty free (hurray!). Have you tried any of the crystal range products? Did you have a different experience to me? Let me know in the comments!
Much Love, Ebony xo
